The annual running of the ‘Roscoe Smith Classic’ took center stage on Tuesday night at Senoia Raceway and it was Ashton Winger that emerged victorious for his fourth event title! Ashton topped Group B during the qualifying session to earn the outside of the front row for the start of the 44-lap main event that honored the late, great Roscoe Smith. The Hampton, Georgia ace grabbed the point at the drop of the green flag and officially led each circuit of the contest, but had to overcome contact with both a lapped car and second-running Brandon Overton to do so.
The incident with Overton occurred on a lap 32 restart after the Evans, Georgia star had briefly taken the lead from Winger with a slidejob in turns one and two. The pair then made hard contact entering turn three, which resulted in the #76 pulling up lame with a broken axle. From there, Winger kept the rest of the field at bay to pocket the $7,544 first place prize money.
Finishing 1.058 seconds behind at the checkered flag was polesitter Donald McIntosh, who stretched out his current Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series point lead with the runner-up performance. Joseph Joiner, who sits second in the latest point tally, turned in another strong effort to round out the podium in third. Twelfth-starting Dalton Cook vaulted inside of the top five to grab a fourth place finish, while three-time tour winner Cody Overton claimed the fifth spot.
“I’m not really sure what happened there with me and Brandon (Overton),” quoted the winning Winger in Schaeffer’s Oil victory lane at the Senoia, Georgia facility. “Brandon slid me and I tried to get turned and pointed as early as I could. I thought I was coming down the hill, but man stuff is happening so fast. I’m not dumb, the caution was for Brandon and I made contact with him. You know, if that was all on me then I apologize and he’s one of the best guys in the pits. That's one of the last guys you want to get into it with.”
Ashton Winger’s third career Southern Nationals Series victory came aboard a Jeff Mathews Motorsports #12 Rocket Chassis powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from RV Select, CURS, Super K Express, Capital Sports Construction, WesPro JCB, CSR Aluminum Fabrication, A-Plus Collision Center, Shenandoah Logistics, Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, and GW Performance.
A hefty 37-car field filled the Senoia Raceway pit area on Tuesday for round six of the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco. Brandon Overton went quickest during MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps, while Donald McIntosh topped FK Rod Ends qualifying with a fast lap of 15.779 seconds. The pair of consolation races were won by Michael Page and Dalton Cook, while Stacy Boles and Landen Zakalowski received series provisionals. Emergency provisionals were then granted to Daniel Boles and Mathew Porter, who rounded out the 24-car starting grid for the ‘Roscoe Smith Classic.’
Following a day off for competitors on Wednesday, the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series is set to invade Sugar Creek Raceway on Thursday, July 23. A $7,553 paycheck will be up for grabs in the second-ever tour visit to the Blue Ridge, Georgia oval.
