Surviving a three-wide tangle with frontrunners Wil Herrington and Zack Mitchell, Cody Overton inherited the point in Saturday’s Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco feature at Cochran Motor Speedway and led the final eleven circuits to claim his second straight tour victory. Cody, who laid down the second fastest lap in Group A during the qualifying session, started third on the grid in the 40-lap main event and was running in the third spot on lap 29 when he attempted a third-to-first slide job in turn four. The tangle ultimately sent Herrington and Mitchell spinning on the frontstretch, while Overton continued on to inherit the point on the restart.
From there, the Evans, Georgia native stayed out front and beat a charging Dalton Cook by 0.651 of a second to bag the $7,553 first place prize money. Cook, who won a B-Main earlier in the evening, vaulted past ten competitors during the contest to capture a runner-up performance. New series point leader Donald McIntosh passed a trio of cars to round out the podium in third. A pair of Floridians - Joseph Joiner and Bubba Roling - earned the final two spots inside of the top five at the unfurling of the checkered flag.
Wil Herrington, who earned Fast Time honors and paced the field for the opening 28 laps of the headliner, showed his displeasure with Overton during the caution period following the incident and took his #14 machine pitside to finish in the twenty-second position. Zack Mitchell, who came into the event leading the point standings, restarted at the tail after getting swept up in the tangle and was able to rally back to post a seventh place effort.
“They were never really fans anyways, nobody liked me,” quoted Overton in Schaeffer’s Oil victory lane in response to some jeering from the Cochran, Georgia crowd. “I felt like I cleared Herrington, I mean he has a brake pedal too. I get it, we are all racing for the same deal. I hate it for him. I mean, he could have let off the gas too. It is what it is. I just appreciate everybody cheering me on.”

A total of 25 Super Late Models converged at Cochran Motor Speedway on Saturday for an impromptu visit by the Southern Nationals Series, which was initially slated to host Saturday’s event at Screven Motor Speedway until the track cancelled the ‘Rebel Yell’ on Friday morning. Zack Mitchell topped the speed chart during MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps, while Wil Herrington laid down the quickest lap during FK Rod Ends qualifying with a time of 13.982 seconds. The pair of B-Mains were won by Bubba Roling and Dalton Cook, while Daniel Boles and Landen Zakalowski were each awarded series provisionals. Mathew Porter, Tyler Thomason, and Brian Nuttall, Jr. were each granted emergency provisionals to start at the tail of the A-Main.
The Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco will make a return trip to Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, Georgia on Sunday, July 19. The $7,553 to win program was rained-out after hot laps on Friday evening. Donald McIntosh will bring the series point lead into the ‘Boro, as the driver of the Billy Hicks Racing #79 now finds himself ahead of Zack Mitchell, Joseph Joiner, Garrett Smith, and Benji Hicks in the latest championship standings.
